Balinese Naming Convention

If you meet balinese, you will find that they have the same part on their name. This is because the naming method of balinese follow certain pattern. Like programming language that have any naming convention to make it easy manage of source code, balinese naming convention might be have the same purpose.

This naming convention only valid for average person. The first thing is to make it easy to identify the sex of person. For the male, in the first name will have "I" in his name while the female will have "Ni" in her name.

The second thing is the order of the child in family. If you are the first child, your name, after your sex identity, will follow by some choice for unisex or bisex naming. Putu and Wayan can be used for unisex. Luh only for female, while Gede only for male. So, if you are the first child you have more choice for your name.

Then if you are the second child your name will contain Made, Nengah, Kadek after your sex identity. For the third person will use Nyoman and Komang, and for the fourth child your name will use Ketut.

The naming convention only designed for four children. Then if have more than four children, will use cycle from the first again.

The universal formula for balinese naming convention is:
[sex identity]+[order identity]+[any name you choose]

If you are a man and the first child, your name will be:
I [Putu or Wayan or Gede] [any name you choose], e.g : I Putu Sugi Ardana

If you are a women and the first child, your name will be:
Ni [Putu or Wayan or Luh] [any name you choose], e.g : Ni Putu Sugi Ardani

If you are a man and the second child, your name will be:
I [Made or Nengah or Kadek] [any name you choose], e.g : I Made Sugi Ardana

If you are a women and the second child, your name will be:
Ni [Made or Nengah or Kadek] [any name you choose], e.g : Ni Made Sugi Ardani

If you are a man and the third child, your name will be:
I [Nyoman or Komang] [any name you choose], e.g : I Nyoman Sugi Ardana

If you are a women and the third child, your name will be:
Ni [Nyoman or Komang] [any name you choose], e.g : Ni Nyoman Sugi Ardani

If you are a man and the fourth child, your name will be:
I Ketut [any name you choose], e.g : I Ketut Sugi Ardana

If you are a women and the fourth child, your name will be:
Ni Ketut [any name you choose], e.g : Ni Ketut Sugi Ardani
